On the Ground Running

Blogs on blogs! I'm currently writing a trio of installments for Northwestern University's School of Communication's career services office's blog. How's that for a chain of possessives? You can read my first post about post-grad life on the West Coast here. Enjoy (I know I am)!

A Blizzard of Memories

This latest post is of a different flavor. It's more of a strawberry cheesecake, as opposed to salted pistachio. What does that mean? I have no idea. The point is, this is a non-fiction reflection piece on my time at Northwestern. You may laugh, you may cry, you may stare blankly into space. Whatever your reaction, I hope you enjoy! Here's the post, published by North By Northwestern.

The Chair('s) Story

After a week off from the blog, I present to you my final piece on North By Northwestern. It's a biography of sorts. Or a memoir of a sentient inanimate object. How's that for an oxymoron? The bizarreness of my writing never ends; it's only transmuted between genres. Here's "The Chair('s) Story." Happy reading!

And with this post, I'll be taking another hiatus from the blog. Don't worry--this break won't be as long as the last! Until next time, dear readers!

The Big Book of Poems

Sometimes I think big picture. By that I mean I often wonder what an anthology of my stories and poems would look like. In book form. If I ever make such a collection for poetry, I think this poem could be an excellent introduction. I even have a name in mind, but you'll have to wait for that! Or this might remain as just another fun entry for the blog (which it is, after all)! So enjoy!

The Man Who Talks

What influenced this bizarre post? Let's see...Non sequiturs. Goldilocks and the Three Bears. And the curiosity of what would happen if I repeated a short story with just one slight character change. Here's the product of that strange combination!

Video Rentals R Us

A have fond memories of going to the video rental store, perusing the expansive sea of films, and being indecisive for close to an hour before coming home to pop the tape in the cassette deck. At which point you had to rewind it due to uncourteous fellow consumers. Finally you could finally sit back, relax, and watch the movie on your little CRT with tinny speakers. Don't you just miss the good old days?

3

Banality is fascinating. Yes, that's essentially an oxymoron, but that doesn't make it any less true. The everyday is peculiar, strange, weird, absurd, crazy...you get the picture. That, coupled with my love for food (which I'm sure you've figured out by now), is the basis for this poem. In turn, the poem inspired (i.e., necessitated) a new design change for the blog: the page is 20% wider, and it's absolutely free for you!

The Life and Times of Gompers McGee

Today feels like a poetic kind of day. So out of generosity and courtesy, here's a poem for you, dear reader. Now, you're probably asking yourself, "Is this poem related to 2011's 'Mr. McGee?'" Maybe it is, or maybe I have some strange authorial predilection to the surname McGee. You (and I) may never know.

The Hoity-Toity Meet the Hoi Polloi

It's time for another epic! Well, an epic compared to the scope of most of my short stories. Read on, and learn about creatures you could never imagine. Until now.

The Apple Thief

And now for post #2 of this week! Certainly a fine way to start off April. Without further ado, a tale of biblical proportions about one important snake, published on and by North By Northwestern.

The Virtue of Silence

In honor of the baseball season starting yesterday, I'm pitching a double header this week! (Okay, that's just a random coincidence, and I apologize for the bad sports joke.) But it's the truth: two new stories are going up this week: a short poem followed by a less short story (being published by North by Northwestern). First up, poetry. Don't you just love spelling in the English language?

Qualify

Throughout my writing, I've discovered that I have a proclivity for the vertical curves that set clauses apart. You know, parentheses. They enable clarification but may also create convolution. They allow for emphasis of details but can also radiate sarcasm. Whether you view these as shortcomings or not, parentheses are hands down (or up) the best punctuation. Here is my ode to them. (Disclaimer: I may have bent some parenthetical rules for this piece. Trust me, I know.)

The Oldest Bellboy and the Case of the Missing Luggage

Detective shows are all the rage right now. Everyone's watching them. Except for me. Nevertheless, the air is still filled with the latent urge to solve mysteries. So here's a short mystery, albeit my twisted take on the genre. Who knows, this piece might even spawn a series!

The Metric Inchworm

Why are puns so funny? If we created language solely for the purpose of making puns, I would be totally okay with it. In fact, I think that's a better reason for developing speaking and writing than for some lowly communication purposes. Especially because communication so often adopts the mis- prefix, resulting in troubles beyond imagination. Here is that story.

Wurds...And We're Back!

Welcome back to the blog! I hope it was missed. It was, right? Right? It's been about a year since there's been a new post, but that doesn't mean I stopped writing. Far from it. Amidst directing a short film, writing scripts, and publishing stories on North by Northwestern, I've still managed to amass a collection of fiction, just waiting to be broadcast to the world. Well wait no longer, my tales; you are now free.

In other words, I'm relaunching the blog! I won't give an exact end date, but I can tell you that you should check back every Tuesday for at least the next 4 months. Yes, that's right. More than 16 new works of fiction, poems, or general absurdity. Starting...now.
